Following on from the last post on the origins of surfing, this week we’ll be talking about learning to surf and why Goa is an ideal location.
So, what makes Goa the perfect spot to kick-off the lifelong surfing journey?
Well to start with, Goa has 160km of coastline, as you can imagine this means that once you’ve learnt the basics and are comfortable there is an abundance of beginner waves on offer for you to practice on.
The waves here usually don’t pack the same punch as other parts of the world (i.e. Sri Lanka, Bali etc). This means as you start to learn to surf you’re not going to get tossed around as much (this is one of the main barriers to entry in the sport). Competing with the raw power of the ocean can be a little intimidating when you first set off. Luckily for us, Goa’s waves roll-in gently and are perfect for beginners to practice and play with.
Another added luxury we have in Goa is we always take beginners out to beach-breaks, this means you’re surfing above sand bottoms as opposed to reefs or rocks. This is gold when you wipe-out, which you will - it’s all part of the fun! Trust us, soon you’ll actually enjoy wiping-out and feeling the oceans irresistible power engulf you.
This might sound a little daunting but rest-assured we take safety very seriously! All our instructors are ISA Certified (International Surfing Association) and have a wealth of experience. They’ll be on-hand to guide you and make sure you’re in the safest of safe positions whilst you enjoy the rush of harnessing and riding the waves. Now it should go without saying that each individual requires a different set of instruction/guidance, as such we tailor surfing lessons specific to each individual. They’ll have you up and riding in no time!
For us, the biggest draw to surfing in Goa is... no crowds - yes, you read that right...no crowds! As we mentioned in the previous post the world is home to roughly 35 million surfers! That means finding a wave to yourself can sometimes be an impossible mission. Luckily for us we’ve got plenty of waves on offer and no-one to compete with, this makes our surf sessions SO much better!
Lastly, we’ve all taken a walk down the beach at sunset and been mesmerized by the beauty of the sun disappearing into the distance, the hues, the cool ocean breeze and the sense of calm that nature’s circular motion provides.
Now, imagine being in the water, feeling the water as it whooshes past you, savouring that salty air, that sea-spray and that one-ness with world. Add a sunset to that and it truly is an experience that leaves all your troubles behind! Trust us, we spend hours sitting on our boards and watching the sun disappear as we enjoy our evening surf sessions.
“It’s a sense of peace and tranquility that allows me to be fully in the present, connected to nature and the ocean - it’s my meditation” (Vaayu’s Co-Founder Rahul on why he loves surfing).
