Monsoon Magic in Goa

So…what is monsoon?

A monsoon is a seasonal shift in the prevailing wind direction, that typically brings with it a different kind of weather i.e LOTS of rain. It almost always refers to the Asian monsoon, a vast region extending from India to Southeast Asia where monsoon conditions prevail between the months of June and August which can sometimes extend into September.

As the monsoon season is presently in full swing in Goa, we thought we’d share our take on the extraordinary beauty that is - Goa during the monsoon. Although Vaayu Village is wrapped up for the monsoon it still is a beautiful time to visit Goa.

The remarkable transformation of the undulating landscape is a sight to see - if you’ve been to Goa during the season and thought it was serene and green. Well, the monsoon takes this to another level! The rolling mountains, dry paddy fields and the abundant tropical foliage come to life in effervescent shades of green. From moss littered walls to eager vines racing up the tall forest trees it truly is a sight for sore eyes. The rivers fill up and the waterfalls cascade over the Western Ghats. Although it is inadvisable to swim in the ocean due to the monsoon swell being rather strong, there are still many adventurous activities on offer. If you are an animal lover, you can opt for some birdwatching or maybe visit one of the nature reserves. If you are an adrenaline junkie how about trekking up to Dudhsagar falls? Or maybe some white water rafting which is great this time of year.

Goa’s Coastline

Goa’s Coastline

Although the rains do play havoc on the coastline, it’s still one of the most delightful times to unwind with a loved one or leave the hustle of the city behind and get stuck into that bestselling book you’ve been meaning to read.

Monsoon also means the prices of accommodation and transport get slashed, sometimes up to 50%! So do check out those bucket list accommodation options that you thought you might be unable to afford.

Yes, your going to get drenched at some point but that’s all part of the fun - riding on a scooter or motorbike is our choice of transport (Don’t forget to wear your helmet!). You will most likely have to find shelter from the occasional downpour however, rest assured once you get back on the bike that fresh rain-filled air and considerable drop in temperature is very much worth it!

Depending on the cuisine you’re after there are several restaurants and cafes that are still cooking up a storm during the monsoon. Vaayu’s recommendations are Artjuna in Anjuna, Matcha in Anjuna - if you are a sushi fan, Olive Bar & Kitchen in Vagator - the view is something special and they make great cocktails, Suzie’s in Assagao - 5 course meal anyone?, Uddo Bar & Kitchen on Uddo Beach - home to some pretty spectacular sunsets, Rutas Roadhouse in Assagao, Mojigao in Assagao, and Hideaway in Vagator - if you feel like a fun night out.

If you are looking for a true Goan experience away from the monotony of beaches and bars then we have some ideas. The Local Beat Goa is a company that specializes in adventures in Goa with treks, local food tastings and off-the-beaten-track experiences. Make it happen is another such company that offers bicycle tours, heritage walks through the Fontainhas and an archeoastronomy walk through old Goa.
